How I continue to overcome my challenges to pursue my dreams
This is episode 6 of Just Like You.
Timothy relies on his helper for his daily needs, and needs help to move around as he's unable to straighten his limbs, much less walk. Despite his weakening muscles and lungs, he enjoys singing immensely. He dreams of recording his own song with the help of popular music duo, Jack & Rai.
Just Like You is a 2018 Channel News Asia docu-series produced by Ochre Pictures that follows the journey of six individuals with mental and physical disabilities, who are striving to achieve a particular goal. The show hopes to change perspectives that people with disabilities are no different, and they can accomplish great things if given the same opportunities as everyone else.
Birth
Melbourne Australia, 4th August 1990
I was born on the 4th of August 1990 in Melbourne, Australia at Mercy Hospital for Women, a second child to Chinese Singaporean mother and Malaysian Chinese turned Australian father.
But, shortly after the birth of my sister, a few years later my family moved back to Singapore where my parents had lived before leaving for Australia.
Kindergarten
Attending Maris Stella Kindergarten
After moving back to Singapore, the family settled down and I was enrolled at Maris Stella Kindergarten.
However, at age 5 I started to walk strangely and fall easily. My parents took me to see a doctor and I was eventually confirmed to be diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy after a biopsy.
Primary School
Studying at Nanyang Primary School
Soon, it was time for primary school and I was to attend Nanyang Primary School. For the first 3 years, I was still able to attend school normally but by primary four, I needed to be carried up the stairs to attend class.
I spent most of my time in school in the classroom, and did not join classmates for recess or assembly because I could not climb the stairs. My mum would carry me up the stairs for class every morning and revise school work with me before class. I did reasonably well for my PSLE considering the circumstances and featured in the chinese news.
Secondary School
Studying at Anglo Chinese School (Independent)
By the time I turned 13 and was attending secondary school at Anglo Chinese School (Independent), I became confined to a electric wheelchair. I struggled to come to terms with my condition and was often bullied.
When I was fourteen, I broke my leg in a freak accident involving the toppling of my wheelchair. I also had to have a major surgery to attach metal rods to my spine to correct the curvature of my spine due to scoliosis caused by my condition. This was done months before my 'O' Levels, but fortunately I did well.
Junior College
Studying at Anglo Chinese Junior College
I went on to attend junior college at Anglo Chinese Junior College. I decided to try to take different subjects to explore my interests but it backfired and I did badly for my 'A' Levels.
However, being in a methodist school exposed me further to the christian life although I was already growing up in a christian home and attending church since young. This enabled me to grow spiritually, though I had trouble making friends and felt very isolated.
Thomson Road Baptist Church
Baptism
After junior college, I logically felt I should go on to university but my results were not good enough. At first, I didn't know what to do but I became interested in product design and I decided to apply to Ngee Ann Polytechnic.
Unfortunately, I missed the application deadline and had to take a gap year. During this time, I spent time growing my spiritual life and took a big step by getting baptised.
International Chess
5th ASEAN Para Games
During my gap year, I decided to focus on playing chess which I did as my CCA since secondary school. I took part in the 4th National Disability League chess competition and came in first place.
This got me a place in the Singapore team to represent Singapore at the 5th ASEAN Para Games in chess in Kuala Lumpur. I may not have won anything but it was an honour to represent Singapore and a thrill to play on a regional scale.
International Chess
Playing chess with Garry Kasparov
After my gap year, I enrolled in Ngee Ann Polytechnic to study product design. The school advised me to consider another course instead due to my condition but I persisted with my decision.
That same year, I was given the opportunity along side many others to play a simultaneous chess game with chess legend and world champion Garry Kasparov.
Musical Rendezvous
Performing with the Methodist School of Music
I also started taking vocal lessons at the Methodist School of Music to pursue my interest in singing.
After a year or two, the school organized a concert at the Esplanade Theatres on the Bay, called Musical Rendezvous. This was to showcase the vocal talents at the school. I was so fortunate to be part of it as I sang with all the students for the finale song, When You Believe.
School of Music and the Arts
Attending a songwriting and production short course
I also decided to attend a short course in songwriting and production, because I wanted to produce my own youtube covers to share my vocals online.
While it was an introductory course, I gained a lot of useful insights into the songwriting and production process. It was enjoyable experience where I got my first taste of actual music studio recording with some talented musicians.
Ngee Ann Polytechnic Graduation
Diploma in Product Design and Innovation
Soon, in the blink of an eye, I had successfully completed my studies at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. It wasn't easy at all but with the support of the school and help of teachers and classmates, I was able to do well.
I had gone from knowing so little about design to finally graduating with a diploma in product design, so it was a very proud moment and a dream come true. The icing on the cake was that my results were good enough to get into university to study at the Nanyang Technological University's School of Art, Design and Media.
Ngee Ann Polytechnic
Final Project Exhibition
My final project was a very wonderful experience for me as I designed a wheelchair based on my dream wheelchair. With the help of a machinist, I was able to a miniature scale model prototype, turning my idea into a tangible object.
My work was chosen among others to be showcased at the design and environment faculty's final year exhibition, which was such an honour and a great way to finish my polytechnic education.
Associate Visual Director
Opening and Closing Ceremony of the 8th ASEAN Para Games
Finally, I made it to Nanyang Technological University's School of Art, Design and Media and went on to major in product design.
University was one of the best experiences, where I learned so much and got to experience many different subjects. One of them was abstract art which was a class where I created beautiful artworks from x-rays. This caught the attention of Philip Tan, the creative director of the 8th ASEAN Para Games to be held in Singapore. I was given a role as an associated visual director, where I contributed my x-ray and some other artwork to be used as a backdrop for the opening and closing ceremony.
HEY! Magazine and Digital Wall
Feature in NTU's HEY! Magazine
Soon, it was the final year at NTU and as part of one of my school projects I tapped into my x-ray artwork and recomposed it to fit on a digital wall display in school.
With my good results despite my challenges, I was featured in the school's magazine with my artwork on the digital wall featured and my final project as well.
University Graduation
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Product Design
In 2017, I finally graduated from NTU with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Product Design with honours.
It was the proudest moment of my life to finally graduate from university after all the ups and downs in my life. It was a dream come true and I could finally call myself a product designer.
National Design Centre
ADM Select Exhibition
As part of my Final Year Project, I came up with an improved version of the wheelchair I designed in polytechnic.
I did well for the project and it was chosen to be showcased in an exhibition at the National Design Centre called ADM Select where the best works from the NTU ADM Graduation Show were on display.

I was able to land the job because they had the members of the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Singapore as beneficiaries and having just joined the association, they came to know about me and hired me.
Just Like You

At the same time, the NTU media team who had got me featured in the chinese newspaper after my graduation, asked me if I was interested in an upcoming CNA documentary featuring persons with disability who have been successful and have an unfulfilled dream.
I agreed to it and was filmed as part of the documentary. I chose to have my dream of recording and performing my very own original song to be fulfilled, and collaborated with local musicians Jack and Rai.

残疾大学生设计超强轮椅 Disabled University Student Designs Amazing Wheelchair

Going Places Award - Timothy Chan | Product Design
Timothy stands tall among his cohort at the School of Art, Design & Media. Born with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, the 27-year-old has been in a wheelchair since 13. Timothy candidly tells us that he is the “worrying kind”, yet he rose to the challenge while he was at Ngee Ann Polytechnic.
When he had complained then about the archaic design of his wheelchair, his occupational therapist said: “Why don’t you design a better one?” Bells went off and Timothy set out to create a wheelchair he would love to use.
